With the November international break in the books, five nations are celebrating victories from European Cup of Nations competitions.
Unlike the inaugural 2026 tournament, when all five host teams prevailed in this window, home ice was not as powerful of an advantage this time around.
This week, Latvia captured Group A in Germany on the men’s side, while Norway came out on top in France in Group B and Ukraine swept their competition in Poland in Group C. That left only Estonia to celebrate a home-ice win, in Group D.
On the women’s side, the host Romanians were also successful in capturing the Group D title.
As part of the ICE26 strategic plan of the International Ice Hockey Federation, the European Cup of Nations was developed with an eye toward providing a framework that brings consistency and purpose to the season’s international breaks across Europe. This is the second year for the men’s tournament, while the women’s event is making its debut.
The IIHF plays an active role in supporting the European Cup of Nations, coordinating the competitions and providing financial support to participating teams and tournament hosts.

Men’s Group A - Dusseldorf, Germany - 5-8 November at Dusseldorf Dome
In Dusseldorf, it was a coming-out party for Latvia, which went unbeaten to capture the Deutschland Cup.
The Latvians’ toughest test came in their tournament opener against Slovakia. With 6:05 gone in the first period, Rihards Melnalksnis opened the scoring with a spectacular individual effort, driving down the slot from his own blue line and splitting the Slovak defense before beating Eugen Rabcan high to his blocker side.
Samuel Bucek drew the Slovaks level with 2:53 left to play in the second. Then, after Latvia re-took the lead early in the third period, Simon Jellus knotted the score with a one-timer on a 6-on-4 advantage with 1:44 remaining.

That set up overtime, where Renars Krastenbergs stole the puck deep in the offensive zone and beat Rabcan with a quick snap shot at 1:27 of the extra frame.
With their confidence high, Latvia went on to beat the host Germans 3-1 on Saturday, then finished out the event with a 6-2 win over Austria.
It was the second Deutschland Cup win for Latvia, with their previous championship coming in 2020.

Men’s Group B – Amiens, France – 5-7 November at Amiens Coliseum
After their surprise bronze medal at the 2026 IIHF men’s world championship, Norway followed up with another win in Group B of the European Cup of Nations.
The Norwegians relied on a strong defensive stance, allowing just four goals in three games. Though they dropped their final contest to Slovenia in overtime, they earned the top spot by virtue of their 2-1 win over the host team from France 2-1 on opening day.
In that opener, France ignited the crowd early, taking a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds into the first period. Amid the beating drums in a packed house at Amiens Coliseum, hulking forward Justin Addamo moved into the high slot and rifled a shot over the glove of Jonas Arntzen to give the home side the early lead.
But Patrick Elvsveen knotted the contest at 5:29 of the first, getting Norway on the board after snagging a stretch pass just outside the French blue line and putting a nice move on French goalie Julian Junca before sliding the puck home.

The game stayed level until late in the third period, when an unguarded Mikkel Oby-Olsen fired the puck toward a chaotic net-front. Mathias Pettersen banged home the rebound for the winner.
