American forwards piled up the points at the World Junior Summer Showcase this past week in Windsor, Ontario.
Ethan Wyttenbach (Qunnipiac University) and Mikey Berchild (U.S. National Development Team) each had 16 points.
Wyttenbach and Berchild each played two games with USA Blue, which defeated Sweden 6-1 on 26 July and beat Finland 5-1 on 27 July.
Following those games, Wyttenbach joined the main USA team which played three more games, losing 3-2 to Finland and 5-2 to Sweden, before ending the event with a commanding 7-2 victory over rival Canada. Wyttenbach scored a pair of goals in the final win and Berchild chipped in with three assists.
Sweden’s leads all teams with three wins
While the Americans piled up the points, the Swedes stuck to strong structure throughout the week and that paid off, with three wins in five games.
Sweden got off to a slow start, dropping back-to-back games to USA Blue and USA White, before reeling off three wins in a row against Canada, USA and Finland.
Filip Ekberg (3-2—5) and Viktor Klingsell (2-3—5) led the Swedes in points but it was team defence that was most impressive with the Swedes, who allowed just seven goals against in their three wins. It certainly wasn’t picture-perfect hockey for the Swedes, though, as they gave up seven goals in two losses to open the mini-tournament.
Finns don’t score much, but still win twice
The Finns had the lowest goals scored per game average at 2.60 but managed to beat USA White 4-1 and the main USA squad 3-2. Jeremi Virtanen (2-2—4) and Jesse Parssinen (1-3—4) were Finland’s top point producers.
Patrik Kerkola played two games in Finland’s net and had impressive numbers with a 3.00 goals against average and 0.898 save percentage.
Host team wins one but ends event with a thud
Canada earned a 5-3 win over Finland on 30 July but that was its only victory. Keeping the puck out of its net was Canada’s challenge over three games, as it allowed an average of five goals per game.
Jack Ivankovic, Canada’s presumed started at the 2027 World Junior Championship which will be held in Alberta, Canada, didn’t see the ice as Canada (along with the other three countries) played its younger goalies and skaters. William Lacelle, Samuel Meloche and Lucas Beckman all split time in Canada’s net.
The four countries used the showcase as part of the evaluation process as they build towards the 2027 World Juniors.
