Prior to the tournament a regional Officiating Seminar was hosted in Malaysia as well as a camp as part of the Asia Support Program from the Japan Ice Hockey Federation.

The IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia program started in 2008 with the aim of giving Asian countries not competing in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship an opportunity to play in regional tournaments.

The program continues in spring with the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia for seven men’s teams in Kuala Lumpur from 2 to 9 March 2019.

The 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's Challenge Cup of Asia will be staged in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates with ten teams split in two tournaments from 14 to 19 April 2019.
